My decision to go for.....the SafeSight TransPRK surgery!

HOLA EVERYONE!

I have a secret to share....

Okay two secrets actually - that :

(1) I am actually bespectacled 😅🤓🤓🤓

(2) My myopia is quite severe as my degree for both eyes is.... -7.50 😪

which leads me to my next point....

I AM FINALLY GOING FOR MY VERY FIRST
(& hopefully last) SAFELIGHT TRANSPRK SURGERY!!

It is a one-step, no-touch, all-laser surface-based laser vision correction procedure to treat Myopia, Hyperopia & Astigmatism!

As no corneal flaps are created in the SafeSight TransPK, it is minimally-invasive & more cornea tissue is preserved for future vision corrections!
In this procedure, only the surface layer (epithelium cells) are being removed - the best part is, these cells are able to regenerate by itself in about 5 days! 😍

Right after I post about a "surgery that I will be going through on Monday", a few of you actually PM-ed / DM-ed me showing me concern and asking me what procedure I'm doing.

I shared what procedure I am going to do personally with you guys, but I left out the WHY.

Actually I've been DYING to do LASIK after my mum went through Lasik herself when she was younger, but I was extremely skeptical because she was telling me about all the side effects and how she regretted going through the procedure.

I did TONS of research on eyesight corrections until I stumbled upon the SafeSight TransPK surgery by ClearVision Singapore.

The advantages of doing the surgery generally includes :

✓ The ability to treat patients with thinner corneas (like mine!)
There will be absolutely no corneal flap created to minimise complications/risks
Enhanced safety (always first!!)
Maintains structural shape & integrity of the cornea

I was told by my mum that her LASIK experience wasn't a good one because there was a need to cut her cornea flap for the eyesight correction which cause quite a lot of discomfort for her.
She also shared about her having astigmatism after her surgery which really made me even more demoralised fearing that I might never find a good procedure to help correct my eyesight.

So imagine my happiness when I found out that the ClearVision SafeSight TransPRK procedure is :
☑ All Laser
☑ One-Step
☑ No Touch
☑ No Cut
☑ No Flap
☑ No Dry Eyes

I WAS SO SUPER EXCITED AND WANTED TO SCHEDULE MY APPOINTMENT RIGHT AWAY AFTER THE DOCTOR GAVE ME THE GREEN LIGHT!😍

For those that follows my IG stories, you would know that I run on a very frequent basis and yes I do wear my contact lenses while running because it is such a hassle to jog with specs on. (joggers would understand!)
One thing about this is that when I perspire, sometimes the droplets of sweat goes into my eyes which can sting and irritate them a little during my jog.

At this moment I really wished that I have my eyesight corrected so I won't have to go through this.😔

And of course, the hassle of having to take care of your spectacles/contact lenses which can be such a bother when you are really tired after a long day and just want to lie down on your bed & shut your eyes...

Not to mention every single time when I travel (and I want to look chio but not blind before taking off in the plane), I tend to wear my contacts on to be always camera-ready but obviously my contact lenses are not very flight-friendly.😒

My eyes can become so terribly dry and irritated and I have to always make sure I remember to pack a small bottle of contact lens solution/case to bring up together with me for my flight.

#SUCHAHASSLE

...and I have always been a constant victim of eye infection due to the constant wearing of contact lenses since the time I was young....

So these basically drove me to the point whereby I felt that I NEEDED to correct my eyesight/vision.
I wanted to be able to be free from the responsibility of caring for my specs/contact lenses & worry-free when I travel/exercise!

Also, my degree is relatively high at -7.50 for both eyes, and I feel that I'm at a good age/time of my life to go for this procedure - I do not wish to end up having an extremely high degree that one day I might even have to consider doing the super invasive ICL for eyesight correction😱

✌ At least 18 years of age
✌ Have a stable eye prescription for at least a year
✌ Not pregnant / breastfeeding
✌ Do report to the doctor if you have any general health / eye conditions that might affect the recovery (e.g. diabetes, autoimmune diseases, etc.)

** If you are not suitable for the procedure, you might have extremely high myopia (usually more than 1800 degrees) and/or astigmatism which you might then want to consider Implantable Contact Lens (ICL)**

(1) Registration

For the surgery, ClearVision is using the high-tech, advanced Schwind Amaris 1050RS excimer laser. The Schwind Amaris 1050RS laser is the world’s fastest laser machine, equipped with a zero latency eye tracker. It is also the only laser technology with the ability to track all 7-dimensionals of eye movements, resulting in fast and accurate treatment.

For me personally, I opted for the Clearvision’s TransPRK Xtra which is an additional treatment to the Safe Sight TransPRK procedure that helps to strengthen the cornea through corneal collagen cross-linking. It is a relatively fast procedure, taking an additional two minutes of time.

TransPRK Xtra is especially suitable for patients with:
Thin or weak cornea (ME)
Very high spectacle power (ME AGAIN LOL)

One look at this table and I can see that generally the SafeSight TransPRK procedure is a more pocket-friendly, safe and hassle-free procedure as compared to all!
It also suits me better as I have a thin cornea and a high myopia degree.

I know that many of you have many burning questions about this procedure but I will just touch on the ones that I have not covered on/questions that are more commonly asked!

Q1 : Is there a minimum/maximum safe power to go for this surgery?
- No minimum power (i.e. 100 degrees is also possible) but maximum 1,300 degrees.

Q2 : Must I stop wearing contact lens before the surgery?
- You should stop wearing soft contact lens for 3 days before your surgery / hard contact lens for 14 days before your surgery.

Q3 : What happens during the surgery?
- You will be awake and eye drops will be instilled into your eyes.
A device will be placed to keep your eyelids open and you will need to fixate your gaze at a blinking green light. Try not to make any sudden movements or squeeze your eyes shut as it might cause inaccurate treatment.
The actual treatment time is approximately 10-15 seconds per eye.

Q4 : Is the procedure painful?
- The procedure is painless and all laser vision correction procedures are done under eye drops anesthesia.

Q5 : What happens after the surgery?
- You need to rest at home and observe good hygiene habits.
Do not touch your eyes with dirty hands & avoid activities like doing housework/cooking/spring-cleaning during the first 4 days after the surgery.
Wear shades/cap for 1 month after the procedure to avoid direct eye contact with the sun.

Q6 : Can I still wear contact lenses after the surgery?
Yes, soft contact lenses including cosmetic lenses can be worn but only after three months after the surgery. Hard contact lenses cannot be worn as they tend to slip due to the altered cornea curvatures.

Q7 : Can I return to work/daily activities immediately?
You will be given up to 5 days of MC and best to rest at home for the first 3 days after the surgery to reduce the risk of infection.

Q8 : Will I still need to wear glasses after the surgery?
Most patients regain their perfect vision right after the surgery which means there usually is no need for you to wear glasses/contact lenses anymore!

Q9 : Can I claim medical insurance or Medisave
This procedure is considered "cosmetic" and medical insurance cannot be claimed.
CPF Medisave can be claimed if your myopia power is more than 1000 degrees per eye or if the difference in refractive power between both eyes is more than 300 degrees.

Q10 : Is there a possibility that I might go blind?
In theory yes but in practical reality it is unlikely.
The risk of going blind from a LASIK complication is actually comparable to the risk of blindness from wearing of your contact lenses.
